Our client, the infas Institute for Applied Social Sciences in Bonn, carries out numerous panel studies and evaluations. The aim of the smartphone app is to inform the study participants about news from surveys and to motivate them to participate further.

The Panel App

In panel studies multiple surveys are carried out using the same sample and the same survey instrument. Thus changes can be traced over time. In order to optimally ensure the accessibility of the participants and to support participation in the individual surveys, the app for iOS and Android was developed as a cross-platform app. We used React Native for the development.

Participants receive notifications and background information about the studies. Content is added by the institute staff via the web interface, which was implemented with React.

Challenge Bidirectional Layout

Participants originate partly from very different countries. One requirement for the user interface was to make the content available in serval different languages; including right-to-left languages such as Arabic and Persian. Right-to-left languages change the layout. Many icons must be mirrored, but just reflecting all icons does not lead to a good result either.

For the cross-platform app implementation, we followed the Material Design Usability Guidelines from Google.
